Are we free yet?

Freedom. What does it mean? Well, the word technically has two meanings. One, "The state of not being imprisoned or enslaved". We seemed to have achieved this and celebrate this year after year. The second meaning is "The power or right to act, speak or think as one wants". We can never achieve this fully because of obvious law and order problems that might creep up especially as far right to speak and act is concerned. Thinking is more of a personal prerogative. Then what is freedom? We celebrate our 67th Independence Day and still, the question lingers. What is freedom? The best answer that I have ever came across to this question is actually a poem by Rabindra Nath Tagore which starts with "Where the world is without fear and the head is held high". Anyone who has not read it should read it right now.
As a kid when I recited this poem in school I got a prize without fully knowing the what the poem meant. And as I have grown up I realize, the poem is still a dream. And till that happens we are not fully free. The old white masters left and the new brown ones took their place.
I am not trying to be a pessimist. We have made great progresses in all fields and are know as a global force. It is commendable and salute to all Indians who have worked hard to take India where it is. But, are we satisfied? Couldn't we have done much better? Answer is definitely yes, we could have done better. We blame the brown masters who took over after British left. Yes, they need to be blamed but there are many things for which onus is on us to be really free.
Think again. Are we really free? How many people you know who took up a career path because someone else told them to or forced them to? How many people did not marry the person they wanted to because they were forced not to? How many people studied things which did not inspire them but did because they had to? Reason given being societal pressures, family pressures, expectations of parents, divisions along umpteen lines like caste, religion etc. What do we then celebrate Independence for? Only, that we are now ruled by brown masters, society, religions and what not?
This is where we need to step up. We need to break these barriers. We need to be and feel Indians first before anything else. If nothing atleast the part where Rabindra Nath Tagore says in his poem "Where the world has not been broken up into fragments, By narrow domestic walls", can use a lot of help from all of us to realize that part atleast.
When these things happen, then we can be free. Take a step and encourage others. Do not just live. Inspire. And then when we celebrate that freedom, it would be so much sweeter. I would end with Tagore's line "Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake."

FRIENDS

Ok I know the title is very cliched and unimaginative. But there are only as many ways in which to convey that this is for my friends. So forgive me for using the age old way (since the famous series on friends was aired) of using this . The matter here though is much more important (at least to me) than these trivialities of title and stuff.

This is my humble attempt to dedicate this to all my friends I have ever had. So, to all my friends, wishing you a very happy friendships day. If there has ever been one thing in which I consider myself lucky, one of those is the kind of friends I have. The irritating, annoying, boisterous, inconsiderate, sometimes show-offs, sometimes childish and many other vices that you probably already know or can think of. To all kind of friends. Ok, I admit I exaggerated. Well, none of my friends are the anything like the above. Or maybe some of them to some minuscule extent. I will leave that a mystery for now. You all are the best judge.

Now that I feel a little better after ridiculing and badgering all of you, it is confession time to sooth down some of the short fuses and small egos I know. Ok, I promise that, that was the last bashing line from me for you guys are not anything of the above, but, great, fun, down to earth, trustworthy, inspiring and many other flowery adjectives.

I have fought with you, argued with you, had fun, gone on expeditions, spent night outs, did some or many stupid things along the way and many more things. But you have always been there every single time when I have needed you all. More than anything, it is your friends who have a good contribution in what kind of person you become. So good, bad or ugly, you are to blame. Choose your words carefully when next time you criticize me ;). It is because of you all that those frustrated, feeling "down and defeated" times, that the going became smoother. It is you guys who have kept me down to earth (not literally though) and made me a better person than what I would have without you all. I know I know, many of you will jump and shout that I am not that a great person anyways but still whatever the improvement, it is all because of you and I will concede this much credit to you all. Each of you has taught me things, knowingly and unknowingly. You have motivated me many times to keep going on. And of course, many times you have praised me over the top which I always know is more to make fun of me than anything else, which is also fine by the way. But, the most of all, each of you have and always inspire me in your own different ways. It is great to have friends like I have. You guys have always rocked and will keep rocking. Wishing all of you a great and happy friendships day. And for those who are not with me toady, who cares whether the day is great or not for you ( :P ), I just hope it is happy at least :). For the final time forgive me. No kidding, Wish you an amazing friendships day :)
